“The Scripps Ranch Fire Safe Council exists to protect the people of our community and their property from the effects of catastrophic wildfires through education, cooperation, innovation and action.” In order to achieve our goals, we incorporated as a 501 (c)(3) Nonprofit Public Benefit Corporation, allowing us to receive grants and employ services such as the California Conservation Corps. There are now 20 neighborhood chapters and we have established firebreaks for over 900 homes. In addition, we have opened six overgrown recreational trails, removed 340 dangerous trees, and planted 165 new trees. As President and Co-founder, I developed a comprehensive evacuation plan with the help of the council.
The evacuation plan encompasses an array of information, such as supplies to be stored at home in case of emergency, the proper routes to leave their neighborhoods, checklists of items to take with you, and what to do when returning to your home after it is deemed safe. In addition to the extensive information it provides for residents, the plan also aides law enforcement and firefighters in efficiently clearing areas and providing information regarding potential water sources they can use to fight the fire. This plan has been duplicated by many fire safe councils and towns in San Diego County since.
